Arriving early, I had the opportunity to survey the restaurant unencumbered and noted how they had created a warm and inviting place. Perhaps they had not envisioned this composition, but I did. Now a nice memory, especially for the nice mix of crab and grapefruit as the appetizer, unusual but very tasty.

Industrial Landscape – Frankfurt

Walking through the Frankfurt International airport, I glanced to my left and stopped dead in my tracks. What a beautiful sight! I am not sure why I find these industrial construction sites so fascinating, but I do. I think I can trace my current interest in these industrial landscapes to my project in China, where there was a sky full of cranes and construction equipment.

In this case, it is the dramatic front lighting with a break in the storm that was passing through, the dance of the construction cranes and how they seem to be aesthetically located and balanced within the frame, the German colors of yellow, gray and black, the crisp lines and shapes that echo of the building that create the horizon with the large aircraft providing a curious break and counter weight within the photograph.

Sometimes during my journeys, I happen across something that causes me to realize; I am not in Kansas anymore.

The PhotoBook – 2nd year anniversary

I just realized that my blog The PhotoBook, where I am providing a wide assortment of thoughts and news about (fine art) photobooks is now at the second year anniversary mark. I think that I have a little over 140 photobbooks that I have reviewed and a ton more in the wings waiting their turn. It has been an interesting experience for me and with a relative open door to receiving submissions, a chance to careful examine some bodies of work that I might not have otherwise. At this time I don’t think that I will be altering much, sometimes wishing that I had more time to spend looking at, thinking about and then articulating my thoughts about these published works on a more consistent basis. So in that regard, thanks for your encouragement and wonderful comments.
