For those keeping track, you may have noticed that I have not been writing about my SoFoBoMo experiences. That’s because I don’t have any yet! I’m part of that procrasting group that will be starting on May 1st.
I have my calendar blocked out for an intensive 5 day shoot and after which I wil be working out the image bugs and tweaks and then loading them into the final book format. I will probably be spending the first week, if not more, working out my series concept and writing my introduction. That may get me the most anal award and even eclipse Butzi!
I’m still working out some book design things with Blurb which I hope to share later this week. There is some hope;- )
Best regards, Doug

While reading Gohlke’s writings about Landscape and Place, I recalled that I had another book in my stacks also titled Place, by Aaron Siskind. Siskind’s book was published by Light Gallery in 1976 and had his photographs mostly from the early 1970’s, but the Introduction by Thomas Hess was very interesting regarding the concepts of Landscape and Place.

I have been trying to keep my priorties in balance lately, including the old adage to Enjoy the Day, as today is all that you have. So while I was getting my post ready for an update on Place and Landscape, I had to get some ballet images of my granddaughter on to a CD for my daughter and son-in-law. So can you blame me for having a good reason to be ‘distracted’, as these couple of images seemed a lot more important TODAY.

I’ve now have the time to follow up on my to-do list from Palm Springs, item number one is to finish the requested submission to CameraArts magazine as I want that to go in the mail Monday morning. So that I can get it to Tim before he forgets our conversation! ;- )
Meanwhile, I hope to write about SoFoMoBo and Blurb this afternoon, but in the mean time, I recommend you read about the very nice book presentation methodology that Kjell is planning to use for SoFoBoMo over on his blog.
Best regards for now, Doug
Update: As it turns out, there were a few more items for the Foundations submission that I needed to do than than what I had thought. And then I found out that I had downloaded the Blurb book software onto another computer, so I have to download it again. Meanwhile with the printer running out some prints in the background, I had a chance to re-read my copy of Aaron Siskind’s book Places. More about Siskinds work a little later;- )

Boxborough Station, Boxborough, MA – from 42.30 North: A Line on the Land, 2002 photograph is copyright of the photographer Frank Gohlke
While working on my earlier question of What is a great landscape photograph?, I came across Frank Gohlke (http://www.frankgohlke.com/) (yes, no direct link, still some bugs in the ‘updated & improved’ WordPress blogging software, grrrrr), who is a self professed ‘Leading figure in American landscape photography’. Come on, that’s what it says on his web site….

With the one year anniversary of my blog coming up, I sorta got into one of those why am I doing this? moods. And while working on that answer, I then found myself as the Managing Editor of a new blog, The Photo Exchange, for the photography group in Southern California called The Photographers Exchange.

Having completed a day of portfolio reviews the day before at the Palm Springs Photo Festival, I would like to share my thoughts about the entire process, especially for those who have not been through one, but are considering it.

While I sort my stuff out after a day at the Palm Springs Photo Festival, I will leave you with a question that was posed to me from Tim Wride, (Independent curator, Director of No Strings Foundation, recently the Curator of photography at the Los Angeles Musuem of Art), one of my portfolio reviewers, Does the same photograph in a different size mean the same the same thing?

Yikes, what a loooong day. Up at o-dark early, then the 2 hours to Palm Springs and find out that there is no resturaunt at the Inn where the Festival is. So after a pleasant morning walk we have coffee. Wonderful.
I had registered for some portfolio reviews, so we started the sign-up process and just as quick, I was talking with reviewers about my series. More about this in the next day or so. But each reviewer was very receptive to receive a signed copy of my LensWork issue, and as one reivewer stated, the LensWork magazine was the best ‘business card’ that they have received in the past couple of Review programs. Still a nice touch;- )
We spent some time with the Epson booth to have a print made on Epson Presentation luster (F finish) and at the Canon booth for a borderless 24 x 30 33″ of the same image from the Canon 8000 printer, also a luster finish. hmmmmm, I will be looking at these two prints closely over the next couple of days.
Also ducked into the Blurb booth, which we had to ourselves in the late afternoon, and I think that I may have solved my SoFoBoMo POD issues. Another update real soon after a little bit of experimentation.
So we finished the reviews, then a short rest and to the final afternoon/early evening two hour panel session about the fine art photography market. Interesting and like wise, more later. I am bushed. We just finished the two hour drive home and it was a long day. But a very gooood long day;- )
And if you are in the SoCal area, this Festival is still going strong and at this point, recommended. (But they are really a confused bunch over there, so bring some good karma with you and enjoy the wonderful sun and beautiful day)
Best regards, Doug
