My Canon EOS XTi default settings

Scooter & Broken Pole

Scooter and Broken Pole (from the series Bad Trip – Sad Trip)

…when I downloaded the images from this last week in Napa, I found out that I had not been paying attention to my Canon EOS XTi “default” settings. I pretty much use two camera settings; Aperture priority (Av) with RAW capture for my creative work and Automatic with jpg for casual documentary. My other basic camera default set-up is always have my 17-40 mm L f/4.0 lens attached to the camera body to reduce the chance of dust (even though it has a dust-buster mode that I always keep on).

For my RAW settings, this is set maximum size and maximum resolution, ISO at 100 and for the Av usually keep the aperture at f/7.1  For the Automatic mode with  .jpg, this is set at medium size and maximum resolution, which gives me about a 4 Mp file.

The downloads reminded me that I had made a quick reference photograph with the Automatic mode earlier in the day and then moved on to a new location without resetting the camera back to my normal default mode of Av. Thus I had about 15 jpg image files when I was expecting 15 RAW image files. Not the same! I just got lucky and that the image that I really liked was from a prior shoot in the same location made in RAW. Really lucky.

I do need to remember that when I made adjustments away from my default settings, that I need to immediate reset them. Next time I may not be so lucky…

Best regards, Doug

  1. Doug, I run into the same problem. I do a lot of my shooting in the program mode, but always end up shooting disposable shots in RAW instead of JPG. I just purchased a 580 EX II Speedlite and am playing with the AV mode with decent results. I’ve been out of the photo game for some time, and with my limited available time, the learning curve is quite steep.

    Great shot, BTW.

  2. I want to shoot on RAW but can’t figure out how to get it there. Where is it on my canon EOS xti?

  3. Audi, you will need to turn on your camera start your Menu (upper left button on back of the camera) and at the first selection (camera symbol 1), select Quality. In Quality selection in the bottom is RAW and RAW/JPEG. Chose one. The RAW/JPEG will create two files each time you take a photograph, one of which will be in RAW format.

Then move the selector dial (on top of the camera) to P, Tv, Av or Manual mode, which are the modes that will use your RAW Quality profile, otherwise you will get a JPEG. While in one of these modes, if you look at your back screen, you should now see the words RAW.

  4. Audi: RAW is absolutely worth learning, if nothing else than for the White Balance manipulation! I had the camera for two years before I finally decided I was going to learn how to use RAW no matter how long it took, and it only took a couple of minutes :( You will need something (like Adobe Bridge if you use Photoshop) to convert the RAW image.
